The Pharos Fund is the Bohemian Foundation’s primary grant-making program. The Pharos Fund goals are: to encourage and enable our youth to become productive members of society; to encourage organizations to work together; and to be a catalyst for public awareness. Each goal area requires a unique grant application. Interested applicants may complete and submit only one application per grant cycle that best fits the organization’s needs. Goal 1: To encourage and enable our youth to become productive members of society
We want to improve the quality of life in Fort Collins through efforts to strengthen the future of our youth. We will work to enrich the lives of youth to create an environment where our youth see themselves as a success, and to create opportunities to function as productive, contributing citizens.

We look for agencies and programs that have clear, strong evaluation systems with high expectations for youth, are responsive to backgrounds, interests and needs of youth and families, and serve a broad cross section of youth.
 
The Bohemian Foundation makes grants that…
 
• create opportunities for youth to function as contributing citizens and appreciate the community around them. Examples include but are not limited to:
  •  Service-learning/philanthropy   •  Community understanding
  •  Cultural participation   •  Leadership experiences/youth organizing
 
• support youth at all social and economic stages in the areas of education, sense of belonging, self-esteem, and dignity. Examples include but are not limited to:
  •  Support for at-risk youth   •  Support for basic needs
  •  Youth mentoring   •  Modeling positive relationships
  •  Multiculturalism
  •  Promoting youth potential
  •  Promoting positive messages about youth,
     generating community support
  •  After school academic and enrichment activities   •  Finding appropriate groups to identify with and belong to
 
• align systems that strengthen healthy youth development. Examples include but are not limited to:
  •  Wellness support/education   •  Substance abuse and prevention
  •  Teen pregnancy   •  Child abuse/neglect treatment & prevention
  •  Suicide prevention  
 
• support parent/child interaction and promote family self-sufficiency. Examples include but are not limited to:
  •  Support for families finding places where they can learn from one another, build supportive communities, and
     meet their needs
  •  Helping families act on their own behalf
  •  Educating and involving parents in their children’s development and providing parents with skills to advocate
      effectively for their children
 
The Bohemian Foundation is not currently providing support for…
  •  Mental health, respite, and disability services
  •  Sliding-fee programs for child care providers
 
Goal 2: To encourage organizations to work together
We want to focus on building the capacity of organizations working together or working more effectively in the care and improvement of our community.

We look for agencies and programs that avoid duplication of services and maximize efficiency.
 
The Bohemian Foundation makes grants that…
 
• facilitate collaboration among the many service entities in our community to improve their effectiveness. Examples include but are not limited to:
  •  Shared overhead arrangements
  •  Joint programming between two or more agencies
  •  Organization consolidation: collaboration vs. competition
 
• strengthen and develop effectiveness of organizations by building capacity. Examples include but are not limited to:
  •  Technical assistance grants to increase:
      -  financial capacity
      -  product/service improvement
      -  board effectiveness
      -  community engagement
  •  Expertise acquisition or access
  •  Clearinghouse of best practice information
  •  Strengthening the organizational leadership and managerial skills of nonprofit leaders
 
The Bohemian Foundation is not currently providing support for…
  •  Programs that bring agencies together in the form of informational meetings to share
ideas, referrals between agencies, or increasing membership in organizations
 
Goal 3: To be a catalyst for public awareness
We want to educate our citizens and inspire them into action. We see the healthy, educated, creative individual as essential to community improvement.

We look for agencies and programs that are vocal, innovative, and resourceful when promoting issues of public awareness.
 
The Bohemian Foundation makes grants that…
 
• support programs, projects, or events that promote issues currently facing our community and require greater public awareness. Examples include but are not limited to:
  •  Utilizing research or information and making it more useful and accessible to the general public or
     to explore community issues
 
• inspire citizens into action. Examples include but are not limited to:
  •  Projects or events that encourage citizens to identify issues, formulate solutions, and resolve challenges related to
     community improvement
  •  Providing forums for dialogue
  •  Encouraging community members to come together in new networks across racial, cultural, and religious lines for
     conversations and activities that will move the community toward creating a shared understanding of an issue and
     provide an avenue to work together
 
The Bohemian Foundation is not currently providing support for…
  •  Agencies providing awareness to specific groups of people who may
already benefit from the program (i.e. newsletters, membership organizations)
